For a limited time, free download “Her” by The Oswalds from the forthcoming HASTA LA BYE BYE.
It was a few years back that I read essays by Alma Guillermoprieto about unexplained killings in Mexico. I began to imagine songs that would sound, in a way, like narcocorridos garbled by an American garage band. It would be a mongrel sort of sound, bad Spanish, ominous legends, a private war on drugs. This is what became HASTA LA BYE BYE, an album by The Oswalds set to come out this fall. The Oswalds are me and my friends Mark Lerner and Mark Donato. The three of us originally played together in 1987. (For a perfect account of what happened, check out Mark Lerner’s blog EVERY BAND I’VE EVER BEEN IN.) I always have a lot of fun playing music with them. The three of us share a love of Cake, Spoon, Titus Andronicus, and Ted Leo, not to mention The Band, The Pixies, The Mekons, Chumbawamba… I doubt we sound like any of those bands but they inspire us. I often don’t feel like I contribute all that much—I provide crude lead vocals and rhythm guitar—but I’m confident it sounds great because of Mark L on bass and Mark D on drums. Please check it out.
